When a Persistent Intrusive Thought Comes True…

Whirrrrrr-EEEEEEEK-rumble-rumble-whine-grrrrrrrrr-BANG-BANG-SPLAT!!!

That cacophony of alarming sounds is not something you ever want to hear coming from your kitchen!

What do you do when one of your persistent intrusive thoughts comes true?

Well in this case, you “duck and cover!”

I’ve written before about persistent intrusive thoughts. While they are not nearly as alarming as when my son was newly born, they still happen to me.

While this is a light-hearted post, please do get support if you are struggling with dark intrusive thoughts. You don’t need to go through it alone.

So can you guess what that horrific noise was? It had to do with high powered speeds, and a wire where it should definitely not have been…

I make smoothies almost every day in my Vitamix blender. It’s part of my personal care. Increasing my nutrition and intake of whole foods has been a significant part of my postpartum anxiety recovery.

A persistent intrusive thought for me during my morning smoothie routine has been…

“What if this thing explodes on me?”

“Would the blade go flying?”

“Would I end up looking like I was on the set of Game of Thrones after an epic battle scene?”

I’m 100% certain it was these pesky thoughts that influenced my immediate actions during the “Blender Incident” of April 2019.

My husband is insistent that I must be over-dramatizing this.

Me: “I could have died!”

Husband: “No, you were fine. Why didn’t you just turn off the blender? You would have had time!”

Me: “I was across the room. It was about to blow! I had to save myself!”

And this is the part where I tell you what happened, and preface it with the fact that I was operating on about 2 hours of sleep. Okay? My kids are past the baby stage, but some nights are still brutal!

So now that I’ve blamed it on tired mom brain, here is what happened:

I was working on my #BESTMOMHACK video series, and had pre-powdered some Thrive Life fruits and veggies and shook them up in my roller ball shaker cup. But after I shot my video, I decided to add a few more things to it, and that it would be easiest to finish it off in my Vitamix.

So I poured it all in.

Wire roller ball and all.

Ooops!

Here’s the end result:

So now I know that my immediate reaction to my blender’s impending explosion is to RUN, duck and cover! And there was probably some screaming involved too. Thank goodness this all happened when no one else was home!

Could I have run across my kitchen and turned the blender off in time? Maybe.

Am I glad that I didn’t end up with shards of hard plastic lodged in my chest? YES! (Plastic shards were spread all over my kitchen and even into the neighbouring living room!)

Did it take me an hour to wipe down my kitchen? Also yes!

Thankfully, I only had to go a month without a blender. My hubby gifted me a new blender jug for Mother’s Day, and he didn’t even rag on me too much for my embarrassing blender blunder!

The new one is so shiny! The first thing I made in it was homemade ketchup. Get the recipe here.

I will never forget that terrible sound though. The good news is, I don’t have that intrusive thought anymore (been there, done that)!
